A 22-year-old architecture student from a private engineering college in Bengaluru tragically took his own life at home on July 11. This heartbreaking event occurred in the Nandaramayyan Palya area, falling under the jurisdiction of the Madanayakanahalli police station. Preliminary investigations suggest that the student may have succumbed to the pressures of alleged ragging and mental harassment at his college.
Background of the Student
The student, identified as Arun, was in his final year of the Architecture program and had earned a scholarship based on his academic achievements. Coming from a modest background in Hassan district, Arun's parents worked as daily wage laborers. He was passionate about painting, particularly portraiture, and was recognized for his artistic talents.
Circumstances Surrounding the Incident
At the time of the incident, Arun was home alone as his parents were at work. Prior to his death, he recorded a video expressing his struggles with mental health and mentioned that he faced derogatory remarks from some classmates, which left him feeling despondent. In the video, he also accused certain peers of engaging in ragging.
Aftermath and Police Response
The video subsequently circulated within a college WhatsApp group, prompting the college administration to notify Arun's family. Unfortunately, by the time they arrived home, it was too late. Currently, the police have opened a case of unnatural death and are awaiting a formal complaint from the family to proceed with further investigations.
